ASHMAN jr Manchie

Unread postby Ashman » Sun Mar 31, 2013 8:01 pm

It begins....

For Joels 14th birthday we surprised him with a beat 88 jeep Comanche MJ. Its already lifted, locked geared and on 33s. In the next two years we will be doing up grades to make it a fun daily driver/wheeler.

Plans for now are to make it more streetable. Ditch the short arms on the front and make a 3link long arm, Pre runner fenders/ bedsides , Caged and paint it Ashman racing grabber green.

This week we got alot done.
We installed the 99 cherokee Grill, lights, and wheel spacers Tyler gave us.
An aftermarket track bar.
Fixed the fuel sender leak.
Modified a set of full doors to be quick released pinned with new locks
Fixed a lot of loose rattling noises.

Took it out for our first trip to Chivo, Joel drove down three feathers and up the chute. Did great for his first run. He needs ram assist, he didnt have enough strength to turn into the rock and needed help. The rear drive shaft can do about 45MPH before we feel a vibe. A trip to Tim at precision products will fix that.

I have a flat bed trailer for sale that might be gone Tomorrow, if it sells some of the money will go to fiberglass pannels. looking at doing Hanemann front fenders and bed sides. Well make them removable so they wont get crushed rock crawling.

This 2wd pre-runner has the look were going for.

So am I sensing a run at Baja in the Ashman Racing future?

I ordered the fenders, The same fronts shown in that picture at 6in flair. The rears in that picture are 3.5, were getting the new 8in. I think we will have the 2nd comanchee with the 8in rear fenders. I pick them up at glen helen the 24 when we race the ultra4 KOH qualifier.

yesterday we got one of the bed sides cut off and a fiberglass one mocked up. taking our time so we dont over trim.
Getting the tail lights to fit the cutouts is a delicate process. A short day, we had BMX racing to go to, Joel took another intermediate 1st last night.

Joel got his permit this week but the Comanche is not drivable yet.
The Packrats killed a bit of wiring and it wouldnt start.

Found the fuel pump was dead, only putting out 10psi. His fuel gauge was also not working.
Comanche fuel pumps had 4 models.
84-90 18 gal and 23 gal versions
91-92 18gal and 23 gal versions

With the HO motor swap his old 1988 pump was backwards full would be empty on the dash gauge. The 91+ 18gal sender does not exists, you can not buy them new.

I bought a Cherokee 92 sender and pump and modified the MJ sender to fit the larger pump and gauge sender. PITA but it works.

Found the Rat cut the CPS wires, speed sender, and afew spark plug wires, with those fixed it now runs.

We started fabbing up the seat mounts, have finished the bed sides and will need a new balanced rear drive shaft. Getting close but my buggy needs some repairs too.

Got the passenger seat mounts finished, but had more motor issues today, checked fuel pressure and it was dead, brand new pump, pulled it out and found the hose on the sender was not submersible line and cracked in two weeks. Crazy this happeden to me 14 years ago on my cherokee. Crazy the manufactures don't use the correct hose.

After fixing the fuel line we went for a test drive and found the transmission was not shifting started in 4 th would not down shit, pulled up the shifter cover and found more packets chewed wires for the tcu.
